I did some research on the internet whilst waiting for your reply and found several sites which recommended powering down the computer and restarting in safe mode holding down the f8 key as the computer starts up.She tried this and it worked.

Then she couldn't exit the bios setup screen without selecting an option and she didn't know what was the wisest option to select. She tells me that the computer a Samsung is now behaving normally when she boots up, so hopefully the problem has solved itself.Certainly you're right that bios setup cut in before Windows was loaded, that was the problem. So she must be exiting or skipping bios setup in order to get to safe mode.
